Labor Day weekend — running Friday, September 4 through Monday, September 7 — is the unofficial last hurrah of summer. Chester County, PA

Longwood Gardens: The Final Frontier. On Sunday, September 6 at 8:15 PM, Longwood closes out its summer fountain show season with a fireworks and fountain display synced to space-themed hits. It's one of the most popular nights of the season, so grab tickets ahead of time rather than hoping to walk up.

West Chester Open Air Market. Four blocks of Gay Street close to traffic so restaurants can spill into the street for al fresco dining and shopping. Born out of necessity a few years back, it's become a genuine West Chester tradition that locals look forward to each season.

Ludwig's Corner Horse Show & Country Fair. Now in its 83rd year, this Chester County institution (held in Glenmoore) brings together horse competitions, a country fair with rides and games, food trucks, live music, and a beer garden. If you want a true taste of local Labor Day tradition, this is it.

Delaware

Kategory 5 Concert at White Clay Creek State Park. On Labor Day itself, from 1–3 PM, the Carpenter Recreation Area in Newark hosts a free outdoor concert featuring classic rock hits from the 60s through 80s — a relaxed way to spend an afternoon across the park's 3,600 acres of forests, fields, and waterways.

Sail the Kalmar Nyckel. Running through September 7 in New Castle, this is a 2.5-hour sailing experience aboard a full-scale replica of a 17th-century Swedish tall ship. Guests can help haul lines, hear stories from the crew, or simply relax on board — a memorable way to spend a few hours on the water.

Rehoboth Beach Art League Outdoor Market. This is the market's final weekend of the season, running right through Labor Day. Expect more than 20 local artist vendors, live music, food trucks, and craft cocktails in a transformed beach-town parking lot — a nice send-off to summer if you're headed toward the coast.

Maryland

Monty Alexander Jazz Festival — Easton. World-class jazz musicians descend on the Eastern Shore for the long weekend, making it a strong option for a day trip if live music is on your list.

Labor Day White Marlin Tournament — Ocean City. A long-running Eastern Shore tradition where anglers compete for the big catch and an even bigger purse — fun to watch even if you're not fishing yourself.

Closer to home in Cecil County, keep an eye on the county's parks and recreation calendar. Smaller waterfront gatherings and end-of-summer events often pop up locally without making the big regional guides, so it's worth a quick check if you'd rather stay close.

A Few Tips for the Weekend

• Book ahead where you can. Longwood Gardens and the Kalmar Nyckel are both popular, time-slotted experiences — don't count on walking up.
• Check start times close to the date. Outdoor events are always weather-dependent, and schedules can shift.
• If you're touring homes this weekend, keep in mind that showings may be a little lighter on Monday itself, since many agents and sellers are off enjoying the holiday too.
