The Ultimate Fall Weekend in Chester County
The Ultimate Fall Weekend in Chester County
Fall in Chester County has a way of filling up a weekend without trying. Between the farmers markets, the foliage, the festivals, and a downtown or two worth wandering, there's no wrong way to spend a Saturday and Sunday here. If you want a plan, here's how we'd do it.
Saturday Morning: Market, Coffee, and a Slow Start
Start in downtown West Chester at the West Chester Growers Market, which runs every Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM at the corner of Church and Chestnut Streets, rain or shine. It's a producer-only market, so you're buying directly from the farmers and makers — seasonal produce, baked goods, cheese, eggs, flowers, and more. Grab a coffee, fill a tote bag, and then wander down Gay Street. The shops and cafés are at their best before the lunch crowd arrives.
If you'd rather start in Kennett Square, Mrs. Robinson's Tea Shop is a charming way to ease into the day, and the nearby Market at Liberty Place offers a food-hall-style lineup of small restaurants if you want options.
Saturday Afternoon: Get Outside While the Leaves Are Turning
Peak color in this part of the state usually arrives in mid-to-late October, which makes this the right stretch for a trail walk. A few favorites:
- Stroud Preserve (West Chester) for rolling meadows and creekside paths
- Marsh Creek State Park (Downingtown) for lakeside trails and wide-open water views
- ChesLen Preserve (Coatesville) for big-sky meadows and woodland loops
- Longwood Gardens (Kennett Square) if you'd rather your leaf-peeping come with fountains and a conservatory
Saturday Evening: Dinner Downtown
Both West Chester and Kennett Square are built for an evening out. Walk Gay Street or State Street, pick whatever smells best, and linger. Chester County's food scene leans heavily on local ingredients this time of year, and it shows.
Sunday Morning: Coffee, Then a Scenic Drive
Take the long way somewhere. Chester County's back roads are at their prettiest in fall, and the area is home to about a dozen historic covered bridges that look especially good framed by turning leaves. Pack a thermos, skip the highway, and let the drive be the point.
Sunday Afternoon: Apple Cider, Pumpkins, and Farm Stands
Local orchards and farms ramp up their fall offerings on weekends, with hayrides, pumpkin picking, and cider donuts. Highland Orchards in West Chester and Milky Way Farm in Chester Springs are two popular choices. Go earlier in the day if you're bringing kids; the lines grow by mid-afternoon.
If You're Reading This the Weekend of October 10–11
You're in luck — two of the region's biggest fall events land on this exact weekend:
- Kennett Brewfest (Saturday, Oct. 10): More than 80 breweries pouring over 150 beers, ciders, and other drinks in Kennett Square, with prizes for best dressed and most impressive pretzel necklace. It's a 21-and-over event, and proceeds support Kennett Collaborative programs.
- West Chester Chili Cook-Off (Sunday, Oct. 11): Restaurants, businesses, nonprofits, and home cooks bring their best recipes to West Gay Street, and tasters vote for the People's Choice winner. It runs noon to 4 PM, with a rain date of Oct. 18.
Coming Up Next Weekend
Already planning ahead? The Great Pumpkin Carve at the Chadds Ford Historical Society runs October 15–17, with carved pumpkins of up to 400 pounds glowing in the meadow. The West Chester Halloween Door Tour begins October 16, a self-guided tour of residents' decorated doors and porches that benefits the West Chester Public Library.
The Bottom Line
You don't need a big plan to have a great fall weekend in Chester County. A market, a trail, a good meal, and one local event will do it. And if you find yourself thinking, "I could get used to this" — that's usually how it starts.
